  1. These islands were discovered and named by Columbus in 1493.  In
  2. 1623, Britain settled the islands but ownership was disputed with
  3. France until 1713.  From 1871 to 1956, they were part of the
  4. Leeward Islands Federation and from 1958 to 1962 part of the
  5. Federation of the West Indies.  The islands first became an
  6. Associated State of the United Kingdom in 1967 and full
  7. independence came on September 19, 1983.  Nevis, the smaller of
  8. the islands maintains the right of secession.
